Jimmy Hsu, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DigiTimes.com [Monday 27 June 2005]
Hewlett-Packard (HP) is looking for additional licensees of its LightScribe technology, among Taiwan-based manufacturers of optical discs and optical disc drives (ODDs), as sales of products based on the technology have so far not met the company’s expectations, according to local ODD makers.
BenQ and Lite-On IT are licensed makers of LightScribe DVD burners while CMC Magnetics is a licensee of LightScribe discs. The technology allows for directly etching labels onto the non-recordable side of an optical disc, using the same laser that writes to the recordable side of the disc.
HP began promoting LightScribe DVD burners in January of this year but sales have been disappointing, mainly because such burners are 15-20% more expensive than normal 16x DVD burners, the makers pointed out. The company has now spun off the unit (called LightScribe), which is now in the process of seeking more licensees.
